Get Ambifold

Ambifold is in a private beta, by invitation: invited testers get a personal download link by email. Here is what you need, and how installing, updates and removing work.

We are inviting small groups of Linux Mint and Ubuntu users in October and November 2026. When the public beta starts, the download will be on this page.

What you need

  • Linux Mint 22.x, or Ubuntu 24.04 or newer, on a 64-bit PC.
  • A desktop that shows tray icons: Cinnamon does, and so does Ubuntu's GNOME. Without one, Ambifold opens its settings page instead.
  • A web browser: Ambifold's settings page runs on your own computer and opens in it.
  • A Google account. The free edition asks you to create your own Google sign-in client, once; the app walks you through it step by step.

Other distributions based on Ubuntu or Debian may work, but we don't test them on a real desktop yet. There is no Windows or macOS version: on those systems, Google's own Drive for desktop does this job.

How installing works

  1. Download the .deb package from your personal invite page. The page also shows the file's SHA-256 checksum, so you can check it.
  2. On Linux Mint, double-click the file and choose Install Package. On Ubuntu, or in a terminal, run sudo apt install ./ambifold_<version>_amd64.deb in the folder where you saved it.
  3. Start Ambifold from the menu. Its settings page opens in your browser, helps you connect your Google account, and shows a preview before the first sync of each folder pair.

How updates work

  • Installing the package also adds Ambifold's signed APT repository, apt.ambifold.com, to your software sources.
  • New versions then arrive through Update Manager (Software Updater on Ubuntu), with your other updates, and you decide when to install them. Ambifold never updates itself.
  • Upgrading to a new release of Linux Mint or Ubuntu can switch off Ambifold's repository: how to turn updates back on.
  • To stop updates, switch Ambifold's repository off in Software Sources.

How removing works

Run sudo apt purge ambifold. That removes the app, its menu entry and its repository. Your synced files stay where they are, on your computer and in your Drive. The full steps also remove Ambifold's settings, logs and backups, and its access to your Google account.
