Release notes

What's new in Ambifold

What changed in each build, newest first. New builds arrive through Update Manager (Software Updater on Ubuntu), and you choose when to install them.

Latest: 0.4.0-beta.3,

Each build says whether it changed the settings format. “Settings format changed: yes” means that once the build has run, older builds can't open your settings, so don't go back to an older build after installing it.

Security

  • Release builds no longer have a developer mode that an environment variable could switch on.

0.3.0-beta.15

Released · Update Manager shows it as 0.3.0~beta.15

Settings format changed: no

Fixed

  • Moving a synced folder to a USB stick, an external disk or a deeper folder no longer deletes files on Google Drive.
  • A name on Google Drive that ends with a space no longer stops a FAT32 USB stick from syncing.
  • Names ending with a dot are now reported on FAT32 and exFAT disks.
  • Files and folders with a space at the end of the name, written onto a FAT32 stick by another computer (for example a Mac), keep syncing.
  • Names a disk takes for the same name no longer lose files.
  • Look-alike names no longer stop a pair.
  • An edit here is kept when you change a name's capital letters while it is edited on Google Drive.
  • "Put them back" never overwrites a file here that is spelled differently.
  • The check after a disk comes back now sees an older copy in a folder renamed on Google Drive
  • Restoring from the backup never writes through a link.
  • A file on Google Drive named like a folder here no longer stops every sync.
  • A sync that meets several known problems in a row now finishes in one go,
  • If Ambifold can't update its sync records, for example because the disk is full, it now waits
  • Encrypted home folders (eCryptfs) get the same disk-room rule as ext4.
  • Smaller fixes:

Changed

  • Faster syncs of folders holding thousands of folders
  • Built with Go 1.27.3,

Known issues

  • A FAT32 stick's name ending with a space, deleted or renamed on the stick before its first sync with this build, is kept on Google Drive.

0.3.0-beta.14

Released · Update Manager shows it as 0.3.0~beta.14

Settings format changed: no

Fixed

  • A stopped sync can no longer delete a Google Drive edit when the folder is on another disk.
  • Renaming a file on Google Drive by changing only capital letters no longer deletes it on a USB stick or SD card.
  • A synced folder replaced by a link never deletes its copy on Google Drive.
  • One file that can't be stored here no longer stops the whole folder.
  • Backups are never synced, and are cleaned up on USB disks too.
  • A full Google Drive now says so, and syncing waits instead of retrying forever.
  • Pausing and resuming a folder while Ambifold was checking it no longer leaves it paused for good.
  • A conflict copy in a folder you can only view gets the plain question.
  • A click on a notification button is no longer lost on a busy computer.
  • A file you can only view on Google Drive, touched on this computer, gets the plain question.
  • A first sync's preview that didn't finish now says why.
  • A folder Ambifold can't open is named.
  • You can sync the top folder of a USB disk or a second partition.

Changed

  • The preview of a folder's first sync says how many Google Docs stay in Google Drive.
  • Each step of "Connect Google Drive" links to the online guide.

0.3.0-beta.12

Released · Update Manager shows it as 0.3.0~beta.12

Settings format changed: no

Changed

  • The list of missing or deleted files names the folders that went missing.

Fixed

  • An edited copy of a Google document no longer stops its folder from syncing.
  • The Google Docs setting now says what really happens to a downloaded copy.

0.3.0-beta.11

Released · Update Manager shows it as 0.3.0~beta.11

Settings format changed: no

Fixed

  • Many missing files now get a plain question: delete them on Google Drive too, or bring them back.

0.3.0-beta.10

Released · Update Manager shows it as 0.3.0~beta.10

Settings format changed: no

Fixed

  • Deleting many files of your own now asks whether to delete them on Google Drive too.

0.3.0-beta.9

Released · Update Manager shows it as 0.3.0~beta.9

Settings format changed: no

Changed

  • Syncing a large Google Drive folder is about three times faster.

0.3.0-beta.8

Released · Update Manager shows it as 0.3.0~beta.8

Settings format changed: no

Changed

  • The tray icon is blue only while files are being copied.

Fixed

  • Ambifold carries on by itself after a crash or a power cut.
  • No more "Up to date" when Ambifold couldn't sync.
  • After the computer starts with a wrong clock (common on computers that also run Windows), Ambifold no longer asks you to reconnect your Google account; it refreshes the sign-in and carries on.

Known issues

  • Renaming a large file while it uploads sends it up twice.
  • As in 0.3.0-beta.7, a rename next to another file with exactly the same size and modification time still shows as a delete in Recent activity (nothing is lost).

0.3.0-beta.7

Released · Update Manager shows it as 0.3.0~beta.7

Settings format changed: no

Added

  • It does this without contacting anyone.

Changed

  • Renaming or moving a file is no longer reported as a delete.
  • The review of a mass delete says what a renamed folder looks like there.

Fixed

  • The tray icon is blue from the first moment of a start.
  • A check of your folder before syncing says so.

Known issues

  • A rename can still show as a delete.

Going back to 0.3.0-beta.6

  • Nothing to set up: 0.3.0-beta.6 reads your settings, your folders and the encrypted rclone.conf of this build as they are.
  • Recent activity lines about renamed files, written by this build, show only the word "renamed" in 0.3.0-beta.6.

0.3.0-beta.6

Released · Update Manager shows it as 0.3.0~beta.6

Settings format changed: yes

Changed

  • Your Google sign-ins are now stored encrypted.
  • A plaintext backup is kept for 7 days.
  • No keyring?
  • If the key is missing, nothing is overwritten.
  • ambifold rclone …, typed by hand, gets the key from the keyring by itself.
  • The rclone commands that Ambifold runs can no longer stop to ask for a password.
  • Built with updated security fixes.

Going back to an older build

  • A build older than this one, such as 0.3.0-beta.5, can't read the encrypted file.
  • Within the 7 days, copy the plaintext backup back: in ~/.config/ambifold, copy rclone.conf.pre-encrypt-… over rclone.conf.
  • Otherwise delete rclone.conf there, restart the older build and connect your Google accounts again.
  • Updating to this build again encrypts the file again, with a new plaintext backup.

Known issues

  • Ambifold asks the keyring only when it starts.
  • While your sign-ins are locked, a folder pair says "Google Drive could not be asked about the folder.

0.3.0-beta.5

Released · Update Manager shows it as 0.3.0~beta.5

Settings format changed: no

Fixed

  • A first sync no longer stops for good at a file that Google flagged as malware or spam.
  • Two files with exactly the same name in one Google Drive folder (Google Drive allows that) were reported as names that "differ only in how accented letters are stored", and renaming files on this computer didn't make the warning go away.
  • When a first sync stops, its panel now says why, and that the files it copied are kept, instead of "Nothing has been synced yet".

Changed

  • The first sync's preview explains that a file or folder you deleted in one place before the first sync is copied back from the other, and that deleting it after the first sync carries over.

0.3.0-beta.4

Released · Update Manager shows it as 0.3.0~beta.4

Settings format changed: no

Added

  • Ambifold no longer syncs a folder that another program already keeps in sync with a cloud drive, or shows from one: a folder inside an rclone mount, inside Google Drive as GNOME Online Accounts shows it in the file manager, inside an ExpanDrive drive, or inside Insync's or overGrive's folder, and a folder that has such a drive inside it.
  • A folder pair whose folder turns out to be inside such a program's folder (set up with an earlier build, or a drive that was mounted over it later) stops before anything syncs and asks you to choose another folder.
  • The Folders page says when another program that connects to Google Drive or another cloud drive runs on your computer (an rclone mount, Insync, ExpanDrive or overGrive), with a reminder to keep each folder in only one of them.
  • While a preview or a sync runs, its panel says what it is doing: "Listing Google Drive: 12,345 files in 2,301 folders so far…", "Comparing the two folders…", "Copying to this computer: 120 files so far…".
  • Before the first preview of a very large Google Drive folder (more than 20,000 files or 2,000 folders), Add a folder says so plainly and offers Choose a smaller folder inside it, or Continue.
  • You can leave the page while a preview runs.
  • New folder…

Changed

  • The preview of a new folder's first sync lists Google Drive many times faster: up to 50 folders per request instead of one.
  • The log of a preview no longer fills up with a line for every folder it would create; it keeps the first 1,000 lines about files and says how many it left out.
  • About on the settings page says that Ambifold is a trademark of iDevelop.

Coming with Pro (not switched on in this build)

  • One-click Google sign-in.

Fixed

  • Add a folder
  • Right after Ambifold started, it sometimes began its first sync of a folder a moment too early, before it was following the changes in Google Drive, and then synced the folder again a few minutes later.
  • Pressing Preview while Ambifold happened to be checking the folders no longer fails with "Preview is not available…": the preview starts as soon as the check ends.

0.3.0-beta.3

Released · Update Manager shows it as 0.3.0~beta.3

Settings format changed: no

Added

  • Report a problem…
  • Health reports
  • Help & guides

Fixed

  • If you deleted a synced folder on your computer (or moved it to the Trash) and moved a folder that holds its Google Drive copy to the Google Drive trash, Ambifold ended that folder pair by itself, as it should, but then couldn't start again, because it couldn't read its own settings.
  • After you chose to carry on with a folder that replaced a synced one (for example Switch to the new one or Merge), Ambifold first checks what that choice would do.

Coming with Pro (not switched on in this build)

  • Ambifold gets a free edition and Pro.
  • Pro connects Google accounts the same way as the free edition, with your own Google client.
  • When Pro ends, 3 folders of one account keep syncing and the others wait.
  • You choose which folders keep syncing, at any time.
  • If you set up Ambifold before 1 December 2026, Pro is free for you until 31 January 2027, as a thank-you for testing.
  • The settings page shows your edition at the top, and Pro in its menu.
  • Renew
  • While Ambifold waits for a purchase it shows six digits, and the purchase page shows the same ones, so you can see the page belongs to your Ambifold.
  • If the free edition's limits stop you adding a folder, connecting a second account or restoring a folder, Ambifold says so before anything changes and offers the trial, which then finishes what you started.
  • If you later go back from a build with Pro to an older one, such as this one, the older build doesn't apply the free edition's limits and syncs all your folders.

0.3.0-beta.2

Released · Update Manager shows it as 0.3.0~beta.2

Settings format changed: yes

Changed

  • When a synced folder is moved to the Trash, deleted, moved or replaced, on your computer or in Google Drive, Ambifold now stops that folder pair and tells you what it found, instead of syncing the change or showing an error.
  • A quick undo stays silent: Ambifold waits about 15 seconds after a folder changes and checks again before it asks you anything.
  • A folder on a disk that is not plugged in, or on a network drive that can't be reached, now shows Waiting with a grey badge on the tray icon, and syncing resumes by itself when the disk or the network drive is back.
  • When the disk that holds a synced folder is almost full (less than 2 GB free), Ambifold pauses syncing it instead of filling the disk.
  • If you moved or renamed a synced folder, Find it… lets you show Ambifold where it is now: it keeps syncing it there, without copying anything again.
  • After a folder comes back (restored from the Trash, plugged in again, found in its new place), Ambifold first checks what the next sync would do.
  • If the folders on both sides were deleted, the pair ends by itself and moves to Recently removed, with an Undo button in the notification.
  • New: Recently removed.
  • When a folder is emptied on one side, Put them back copies the files back from the other side.
  • When many files are deleted at once, Ambifold now lists them and asks whether to delete them on the other side too, or to put them back.
  • If you delete files on your computer that belong to someone else in Google Drive (in a folder someone shared with you, or someone's files in a folder you share), Google Drive doesn't let Ambifold delete them there.
  • If you add or change files in a folder you can only view in Google Drive, Ambifold now says so, names the files and puts that folder pair on hold.
  • A document open in LibreOffice in a Google Drive folder you can only view no longer asks you anything: LibreOffice's lock file next to it can't be uploaded there, so the folder pair shows Waiting in grey, with no notification, and syncing carries on by itself when you close the document.
  • The tray icon now has three colours: amber when a folder needs a decision, red when something is wrong and your files are not being protected, and the usual icon otherwise.
  • The tray's Open folder menu is now called Synced folders, and it always works, even with no folder pairs: then it says "No synced folders yet" and offers Add a folder….
  • New in the tray menu: Open Google Drive on the web opens your whole Google Drive in your browser.
  • Notifications now have buttons for the safe choices.
  • When Ambifold starts while folders wait for your decision, it asks again in one notification once it has checked your folders: "2 folders need a decision" with Review…, or the question itself with its buttons.
  • While a folder waits for your decision, for example about deletes Ambifold is holding, Ambifold reminds you once a day, in one notification.
  • If Ambifold stopped unexpectedly, the questions it left on screen are closed when it starts again.
  • Each folder pair has an activity list: the deletes it synced (with the date until which they can be restored from the Drive trash), the folders it followed and the choices you made.
  • A new folder pair can't use a folder that another pair uses.
  • Folders on network drives and FUSE mounts (for example sshfs or an SMB share) now say so when you choose them: Ambifold sees changes made there from other computers only when it checks, every few minutes.
  • The Connect Google Drive steps now say what Google shows after you publish your app: the Branding page says your branding needs to be verified and offers Verify branding.

Fixed

  • A sync that was running while its folder was moved to the Trash, or while its disk was unplugged, could record the folder as empty; the next sync could then delete the files in Google Drive.
  • Deleting a large folder with many files on your computer could start a sync before the delete had finished, so part of the delete went to Google Drive before the mass-delete check could stop it.
  • A folder in Google Drive that you can no longer open (it was unshared, or it belongs to someone else who deleted it) was treated like a deleted one.
  • Google Docs, Sheets and Slides no longer count as files when Ambifold checks whether a Drive folder was emptied, if you chose not to sync them.
  • An update or a quit could stop a sync that started at the same moment.
  • When many files were deleted at once, Ambifold counted each deleted folder as one more file: a folder with 280 files in it was "Delete 281 files", and the list showed the folder itself as "1 other file".
  • The activity line for files deleted on Google Drive named a folder ("42 files in ‘Old’") even when some of them were elsewhere.
  • A shortcut in Google Drive to a file or folder that was deleted, or that is no longer shared with you, stopped its folder pair from syncing at all.
  • If Put them back was interrupted while it copied (a pause, a full disk, quitting Ambifold, the end of the session, an update, a crash or a power cut), the next sync could still delete the files it had not copied back yet, if there were fewer of them than the safety limit for deletes.
  • A folder pair whose Google Drive folder has curly brackets ({ }) in its path could ask for a fresh start after Ambifold followed the folder to its new place.

Known issues

  • A folder you renamed or moved on your computer is not followed by itself yet: Ambifold says it can't find it, and Find it… shows it the new place.
  • Put them back
  • On a network drive or a FUSE mount, a folder that was deleted from another computer is only noticed at the next check, and Ambifold waits for it like for an unplugged disk instead of asking you at once.
  • Ambifold can't tell whether the settings page is showing a decision, so its daily reminder may come while you have the page open.
  • Files you add or change in a folder you can only view in Google Drive keep that folder pair on hold until they are out of that folder, or until you get edit access: Ambifold can't yet keep them on this computer only.
  • LibreOffice creates a lock file next to a document while it is open.
  • If the same Google Drive folder is synced twice, once as its own folder pair and once through a shortcut inside another synced folder, both copies on your computer sync with it and it is downloaded twice.
  • A shortcut in Google Drive that points to a folder it is in is skipped, without a message.
  • When you add a shortcut to a large shared folder inside a synced folder, Ambifold starts downloading all of it within seconds, without showing its size or asking first.
  • If you go back to an older build after this one saved its settings, the older build can't read them.

If something looks wrong after an update

Pause all syncing from Ambifold's tray icon, don't uninstall it, and follow what to do when files seem to be missing. Then write to support@ambifold.com.
