Terms of use

The terms for using the Ambifold desktop app and this website. Part B adds the terms of the private beta.

The short version

  • Ambifold is free, for your own use. Please don't pass on beta builds or invite links.
  • It is a sync tool, not a backup. Deletions sync too. Keep your own backup of anything you can't afford to lose.
  • It comes “as is”, and our liability is limited as far as the law allows.
  • You may name our pages (ambifold.com, its privacy policy and these terms) in the Google client you create for your own use of Ambifold.
  • Israeli law applies. If you are a consumer, you keep the protection of the laws and courts of your own country.

1. Who we are

Ambifold (“we”, “us”) is a product of iDevelop (trading as Ambifold), a business registered in Israel. We make the Ambifold desktop app and run this website, ambifold.com. You can reach us at support@ambifold.com.

These terms apply when you install or use Ambifold, or use this website. By installing or using Ambifold, you agree to them. If you don't agree, please don't use it. How we handle personal data is described in our privacy policy.

2. Your licence

  • Ambifold is free. We give you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable licence to install and use it on computers that you use.
  • Please don't redistribute pre-release (beta) builds, or share the links to them.
  • Ambifold will be released as open source under the Mozilla Public License 2.0. Once its code is published, that licence governs the published code, and nothing in these terms limits the rights it gives you.
  • Ambifold includes software by others, such as rclone, under their own licences. The app lists them in its About view (“Third-party licenses”). These terms don't limit those licences.
  • We keep all rights that these terms don't give you, including in the name and logo “Ambifold”.

3. Your Google client

In the free edition, Ambifold connects to Google through an OAuth client that you create in your own Google Cloud project, following the app's setup guide. That project and your use of Google's services are between you and Google, under Google's terms. We are not a party to them, and we get no access to your project or your data.

Permission to name our pages. In a Google OAuth client that you create only for your own use of Ambifold, you may enter:

  • Ambifold as the app name;
  • https://ambifold.com as the application home page;
  • https://ambifold.com/privacy as the application privacy policy link;
  • https://ambifold.com/terms as the application terms of service link;
  • ambifold.com as an authorized domain.

This permission does not cover clients used with other apps, clients that you make available to other people, or our logo: please leave the logo field empty. It doesn't make the client ours, and it doesn't promise that Google will accept these values. Our privacy policy describes how the Ambifold app handles the Google data it accesses through such a client.

We may withdraw this permission by a notice on this page. The withdrawal applies only to clients created more than 30 days after the notice; clients created before then keep the permission.

4. A sync tool, not a backup

Ambifold keeps folders in two-way sync. It copies changes in both directions, and that includes deletions: when you delete a file on one side, Ambifold deletes it on the other.

Ambifold has safeguards: a preview before the first sync of a folder pair, a stop when one sync would delete more than half of the files on a side (you can change the limit), a backup folder for files that a sync deletes or replaces on your computer (kept 30 days by default), and Google Drive's trash for files that a sync deletes in your Drive (kept 30 days by Google). They reduce the risk, but they can't remove it.

Keep an independent backup of anything you can't afford to lose.

5. No warranty

As far as the law allows, Ambifold and this website are provided “as is” and “as available”, without any warranty, express or implied, including of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose and non-infringement. We don't promise that Ambifold will be free of errors, work without interruption, work with every system, desktop or Google account, or never change, duplicate or delete a file.

6. Liability

  • As far as the law allows, we are not liable for any indirect or consequential loss, or for any loss of data or files, profits, business or goodwill, arising from Ambifold or this website.
  • As far as the law allows, our total liability to you for all claims about Ambifold and this website is limited to USD 50.
  • Nothing in these terms limits or excludes liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, for fraud, for wilful misconduct or gross negligence, or any other liability that cannot be limited or excluded by law.

7. Changes and ending

  • We may change these terms. For a material change, we give at least 14 days' notice: on this page, and by email to beta testers. The date at the top shows the current version.
  • We may change Ambifold, or stop offering it. You may stop using it at any time; removing it takes a few minutes.

8. Law and courts

These terms are governed by the laws of Israel. The courts of Tel Aviv-Jaffa have jurisdiction, but not exclusively. If you are a consumer, you keep the protection of the mandatory laws of the country where you live, and you may bring a claim in its courts.

Part B

The private beta

This part applies to pre-release (beta) builds of Ambifold and to taking part in the private beta. It adds to the general terms above.

B1. By invitation

The private beta is by invitation. Your invite link is personal: please don't share it.

B2. Pre-release software

Beta builds are unfinished. A bug may change, duplicate or delete files, on your computer or in your Google Drive. Use the beta only with folders that you have backed up, and never for the only copy of important files. In particular:

  • Two-way sync copies deletions too.
  • Start with one folder that you also have a copy of elsewhere, and keep your own backups.
  • Don't let another sync tool (Insync, ExpanDrive, an rclone mount or rclone bisync) manage the same folder.
  • If files look missing: choose Pause all in the tray menu, don't uninstall, don't empty the Drive trash, and email us. See what to do if files look missing.

B3. Free

The beta is free. Beyond the free edition that we have announced, we make no promise about any future price, plan or feature.

B4. Your feedback

If you send us feedback, ideas or suggestions, you allow us to use them freely to improve Ambifold, without payment. We don't publish your name or your messages without asking you first.

B5. Diagnostics

Logs and diagnostic information are made on your computer, and only you decide whether to send them to us. The file that About › Save diagnostics makes leaves out file and folder names, paths and addresses, and shows you its whole text first. Logs and screenshots can contain file and folder names and your computer's user name: please check them before you send them.

B6. Talking about the beta

There is no non-disclosure agreement: you may talk and write about the beta, and we ask you to say that it is a beta. Please don't share builds, invite links or download links, or anything you learn about other testers.

B7. Emails

While you take part, we email you about new builds and about problems that affect you, for example a build that you should update or pause. These emails are part of the beta. The two check-in emails (7 and 30 days after you join) come only if you asked for them. To stop all our emails, reply “leave” or “unsubscribe”, or use the unsubscribe link in any of them; that also ends your participation (B8).

B8. Leaving and ending

You can leave at any time. We may end the beta, or your participation, at any time, and we tell you by email. The copy of Ambifold you installed keeps working after that. It also keeps receiving beta builds through Update Manager until you uninstall it or switch its repository off, and once you have left we can no longer warn you by email about a faulty build.

B9. Age

You must be 18 or older to take part in the beta.

For beta builds and the beta, this part B wins over the general terms where they conflict.
